Book of the Week: Evil Ernie – Youth Gone Wild, by Brian Pulido

It’s not pretty. It’s not happy. Hell, it’s not even cute, but you can’t deny this one simple fact: Evil Ernie rocks. For those of you familiar with The Mask series of comics, you know, the dark one, I’m sure your appetite for violence and animated gore is fairly intense. So why not give Evil Ernie a shot?

It’s not really about the plot. A young man driven mad by a combination of severe child abuse and a bizarre dream machine that links him to lady death (either death incarnate, or just a really crazy bitch who likes to wake up to a pile of corpses in the morning). One thing leads to another, and he gets killed with yet another experiment, only to come back with mental powers. Every person he kills becomes a bloodthirsty zombie, intent on helping Ernie create an army of ‘friends’.

That’s really all there is to the plot, to be honest, but it’s a fun ride there, and this issue only left me hungry for the rest of them.

I’m going to preface this with a quick ‘I didn’t actually want to see this movie in the first place, I’m tired of zombies, they’ve never even been at the top of my list for monsters in general.’ But…damn it…this one was awesome. It touched on every little point you need in a good horror adventure. I thought I was honestly about to watch Snowpiercer ‘with zombies!’

This was one of the few times I was glad to be proven wrong. Not to mention, my favorite South Korean actor (Gong Yoo) gets a pretty juicy role in it, too.  I really don’t want to go into much detail, because it’s just a movie you need to watch star to end on your own, but let’s just say if this movie was a video game, I’d probably play it until the disc melted.

Vintage Comics – Skeleton Hand, Issue 1 : Sea of Retribution, Chill Chatter, Death For Hire, Monster of the Deep, The Corpse Under the Carpet (Pg. 12 – end)

This time around, I decided to celebrate the season you guys deserved a larger portion of the comic at once, so here’s the rest of the first issue of Skeleton Hand. There’s nothing better than a story about a man getting his just desserts, which is altogether my favorite sort of horror. Well, that and the kind that has you really cheering for the innocent victims to get out of whatever grisly mess they’ve ended up in. The first story also happens to be educational as well. I had no idea John Paul Jones founded the American navy! Actually, that’s simplifying what he did, but this isn’t a history lesson, it’s a pre-code comic, so give me a break.

Chill Chatter is an editors’ note, but I thought it was charming enough to be included. Honestly though, some of these stories in this issue are actually a little more gruesome than most of the fare I’ve shared with you guys, and despite the condition, this one quickly became one of my favorites, too. Plus, a zombie named ‘Cracker’?! Who can resist a story like that?

The last two one-off stories are…actually a little funnier than you’d expect, and I think only one of them may have been on purpose.

Book of the week – Lenore: Wedgies, by Roman Dirge

wedgies

Back when I was in junior high, the webcomic world was blossoming for the first time across the internet. Aside from my Archie comics, which my mom bought me on every bi-weekly grocery trip, I hadn’t gotten the opportunity to really delve into others until then. So, I decided I wanted to use my extra cash from household chores to buy something special. I went to a comic store for the first time, and I found…Lenore, by Roman Dirge (a fun artist who also happens to be pretty close friends with Jhonen Vasquez of ‘Invader Zim’ fame.) This was the first issue I bought, and I instantly fell in love with the creepy little dead girl who didn’t really comprehend the idea of mortality, and thus many of her poor pets had to suffer from her unwittingly dangerous affection.

My Lenore obsession burnt out by the time I was in high school and really exploring other, slightly more mature comics, but this book will always hold a place in my heart, and even to this day when I pick it up, a quick look at a page or two always elicits a soft chuckle. Don’t let your possibly bitter memories of the overly marketed Hot Topic prevent you from reading these comics. You’d be missing out on something pretty good.

Horror Flick of the Week: Bloodsuckers from Outer Space (1984)

Filmed in Dallas. Absolutely…bizarre. Because it’s hard to tell whether the filmmakers were trying to make something scary…or something just…awful. Then at times the comedy comes through, and at other times…are they trying to be scary again? Yes? No? I’m not really sure….At any rate, I feel like everyone who likes a good bad horror movie needs to watch ‘Bloodsuckers from Outer Space’ at least once in their lives.

Don’t get me wrong, when I say this is awful. I don’t hate this movie at all. Because this was the first zombie film I ever watched. There is such an intense fondness in my heart for Bloodsuckers from Outer Space for that reason alone, that I can’t honestly say ‘don’t watch this. It’s terrible.’ My mom had this film on her shelf for years, and every time I’d look at the green and black VHS cover, I’d get chills up and down my spine remembering how awful it was watching a farmer vomit blood at the opening until he morphed into some sort of weird…blue…scarred…zombie thing. I didn’t notice the tube at the side of his mouth when I was 5.

Basically, this is like Diet Troma. A far more watchable movie than anything actually from Troma (Toxic Avenger aside, because I freaking love that one). And for the most part…family friendly. Kind of.

At any rate, Bloodsuckers tries to be a brilliant horror satire, and it fails. Killer Klowns ended up being much for successful in that regard. But…it’s still charming. And it’s a movie everyone needs to see once in their life, especially if they’re from Texas.

puppet

I think it’s fair to say I am a HUGE puppet/muppet fan. I just love them. Some day when I find the time, buy the materials, and have enough friends interested in the project, I’d like to make a horror anthology series using only muppets…but until then, I’ll just keep watching awesome muppet-puppet films…and also suggesting you check out this INCREDIBLE kickstarter. This is seriously one of the BEST-LOOKING kickstarter projects I’ve ever seen, and my heart will ultimately be torn to pieces…in a bad way…if it doesn’t happen.

For more information about this epic movie…please check it out on kickstarter, and definitely consider helping them make it a reality.
